Tafsir al-Mizan, Volume 6

Tafsir al-Mizan, Volume 6

This volume begins with the story of Maryam (Mary) and her selection by God (verses 42–47). ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabaʿī examines Mary’s spiritual status, her miraculous conception of Prophet Jesus (a.s.), and the announcement of his prophethood. The commentary then addresses the characteristics of Prophet Jesus (a.s.), his miracles, and his mission to the Children of Israel (verses 48–63). Particular focus is given to the Qur’anic refutation of Christian doctrines such as the Trinity and the deification of Jesus.

A substantial part of this volume engages with historical and theological critiques of Judaism and Christianity. Discussions include the historical authenticity of religious scriptures, the divergence of Christian beliefs from Jesus’s teachings, and the Qur’anic argument against the concept of redemption. ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabaʿī provides a nuanced analysis of the unity of divine guidance across different prophets, emphasizing the consistency of the monotheistic message.

In the latter part of the volume (verses 96–120), the focus shifts to the Kaʿbah and its historical significance. The commentary explores the Qur’an’s emphasis on the Kaʿbah as a unifying symbol for the Abrahamic faiths and the broader implications of this unity for humanity. Themes of steadfastness in faith, patience, and unity among believers are also emphasized, reflecting the socio-political context of early Islam.

Subtle discussions include the philosophical implications of divine selection, the interplay of free will and divine decree in historical events, and the symbolic significance of Prophet Jesus (a.s.) as a “Word of God.” The volume also reflects on the Qur’anic critique of historical deviations in religious traditions and their impact on society.
