Tafsir al-Mizan, Volume 7

Tafsir al-Mizan, Volume 7

Volume seven continues the commentary on Sūrah Āl ʿImrān (Chapter 3) from verses 121–200, addressing themes such as the Battle of Uḥud, social and ethical lessons for the Muslim community, and reflections on divine guidance. It also begins the commentary on Sūrah al-Nisāʿ (Chapter 4) with verse 1, delving into the origins and unity of humanity.

This volume opens with discussions on the Battle of Uḥud, exploring the causes of the Muslims’ setback and their subsequent recovery. ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabaʿī emphasizes the lessons of steadfastness, trust in God, and the importance of collective unity in the face of adversity (verses 121–129). The ethical and spiritual dimensions of divine forgiveness and mercy are further explored (verses 149–164), highlighting the centrality of repentance and reliance on God.

In verses 190–200, the commentary reflects on the natural world as a sign of divine wisdom and the imperative for believers to engage in constant reflection and remembrance of God. This section is complemented by a profound discourse on the mutual connection of believers in an Islamic society, addressing themes such as the relationship between individuals and society, the basis of an Islamic social system, and the pursuit of happiness through divine guidance.

With the transition to Sūrah al-Nisāʿ, the volume examines the origins of humanity, emphasizing the unity and equality of all people. ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabaʿī presents a detailed examination of the Qur’anic narrative of creation and its implications for the foundations of human society.

Subtle discussions in this volume include the philosophical implications of trials and tests in human life, the balance between individual and societal obligations in Islam, and the Qur’anic perspective on social reform and governance. Through its meticulous analysis, Volume seven provides timeless lessons on the interplay of divine will, human agency, and the ethical structure of an Islamic society.
